Welcome to the City of South Gate’s website for the Tweedy Boulevard Specific Plan. We are embarking on the exciting process of revitalizing Tweedy Boulevard, and you are invited to participate in planning its future course. Over the next two years, we will be preparing the Tweedy Boulevard Specific Plan, which will guide future development of mixed uses in a walkable environment, streamline the development process, and serve as an incentive for economic development. You are invited to participate in this exciting planning process by attending community workshops and offering your viewpoints on the future of Tweedy Boulevard.
Just over three miles in length, Tweedy Boulevard is one of the main commercial corridors in the City. The Specific Plan area is approximately 650 acres in size, and is generally bounded by Indiana Avenue to the north and Michigan Avenue to the south, the City of Los Angeles to the west, and the Los Angeles River to the east.
Tweedy Boulevard contains the area commonly known as “Tweedy Mile,” which was, historically, the downtown of South Gate – the place for shopping, dining, entertainment, and recreation. These functions are evident in the provisions for public parking, streetscape enhancements, the historic Allen Theater, the County of Los Angeles Public Library, several older elementary schools, and South Gate Park. Tweedy Mile really was a “complete street” which served as the heart of the City. Unfortunately, Tweedy Mile is no longer serving in this capacity. Over time, incompatible strip commercial development has replaced older buildings along the Boulevard, losing much of the traditional “downtown” character of the street.
The Tweedy Boulevard Specific Plan presents the opportunity to revitalize the heart of the City with a plan that embodies both the best of South Gate’s history and its future potential. While Tweedy Boulevard has numerous issues, it presents a tremendous asset and opportunity for the community as a citywide and regional destination. With your input throughout this process, the Specific Plan will help return Tweedy Boulevard to being a vibrant urban corridor.
